Steve temby cat print

Footprint taken at Temby footage site. The zoo kepper in the interview said, disingenously, it did not match any animal there. So What.?Its a large cat print. If he did not know that, they must have been interviewing one of the administration staff.

Steve Temby footage of an australian big cat which, we think are a super version of fcatus. We do not think all large cat reports are "just" monster ferals either. Its just a pity that Temby had read nothing about cats, would speak to one about his footage or the royalties and didnt know about getting some other distance measurements or to take the photo of the back of the foot print without the coin in the way.

Licola 1974 sighting report

I came across your website and the subject evoked memories of my teenage years hunting small game between Glenmaggie and Licola in Gippsland, Victoria, with my buddies. My friend and I were hunting rabbit with .22 rifles and were moving quietly through some green bracken one late spring morning in 1974, when we were both startled to see a large black animal about 200 mtrs uphill from us that was obviously stalking a small mob of grey roos higher up the hill near the tree line. We were concealed well in low scrub at the bottom of the hill, yet had a reasonably good view of the animal as it moved from cover to cover, making it's way diagonally across the hill towards the kangaroos. We were perplexed as to what sort of animal would be stalking game as big as a grey roo, and as we watched it we became convinced that it wasn't canine. At first we couldn't put our finger on what gave us that impression. The animal was slinking fluidly between the tufts of grass in a manner that didn't gel with the way a dog crept up on prey, but as we watched, we realised that the animals tail was twitching and curling like a cats. The kangaroos spooked and bolted into the bush before this "catlike" predator could strike. I'm of the opinion that a dog would have chased the roos immediately, but this creature seemed to just resign itself to the fact they were gone and lay down in the fern whilst checking its options. After a few moments it moved off in the opposite direction to that of it's escaped prey and, keeping a very low profile, it "slunk" off into scrub and out of our view. What we saw was a large, black animal about 1.5 metres long (including tail). It didn't stand up straight while we were watching it due to it stalking prey at the time, but I'd estimate it's height to be about 60cms at the hips if it did. It had a short, "pug" like face, short ears and persistently moved in a stealthy, catlike manner. The creature made no sound at all during the 6 or 7 minutes the episode lasted for and both my friend and I were positive that it was much too large to have been a feral cat, yet it's movement was much too fluid to be a large dog. We never told anyone about it as we were sure we'd be scoffed at... but if it'll help your stats as to sightings of "big cats" in Oz at all ... Then I'm bloody sure I've seen one ! Cheers .......... Rick

Gippsland Phantom Cat

The Gippsland Phantom Cat .

This is the only video on the net of this interview that we did with Kurt.We filmed Kurt and then broke the story to the papers in June 2005 when we met Kurt Engel and looked at the 26" tail.Bernie Mace was brought in and sampled a piece of tail for Mitochondrial DNA , which came back f.catus, wild domestic cat. This test was paid for by the Sunday Herald Sun in Melbourne. The tail and photos were examined by Melbourne Museum where one of the biologists stated that the tail was real and not a "trick cut".We have never released the most crucial photo which shows the animal at the crack of dawn hanging up next to the verandah posts near nails.I was able to measure the post and it confirmed that the animal was as large as Kurt claimed. Here is one of the photos. We have not given away the best photo since we want something for the book .The "hidden" photo shows the animal next to the post and meant we could measure the animal against nails on the post.

dog and cat footprints

Its helps if we know the difference between a dog and a cat footprint. On the left is a dog print, notice nails are out, the two front toes are sort of in line, and the rear pad shape. And the shape of the toes.

Now we see a cat print, the give away are 3 lobes at the back of the plantar lobe(rear pad)the top of the plantar lobe(flat)the shape of the toes and the no nails. And the uneven alignment of the front toes.Note-dogs do not always leave nail marks, and sometimes, cats will leave nails...Australian substrate is so dry it is very hard to get decent prints of Australian big cats.!

What are some of the things that are slowing down the study of Australian bigcats ?Well, the first is that many farmers and hunters and members of the public are reluctant to come forward due to the chance of ridicule. Then the actual hunters of the australian big cats themselves wreck it.Seriously..we have met "experts" who are interested in reports like pumas in Victoria and they have managed to collect no evidence of large felids in Australia in 10 years.
We have "experts" in NSW who have proven they cannot tell the difference between a normal sized domestic cat and something from the panthera genus. How could people be that ignorant after years of "work".?

Pumas in Western Australia

Another historical report from Western Australia.

The Sunday Times on November 18, 1972.

Two strange cat-like creatures which have been terrorising properties north of Koorda struck again this week. They rounded up a flock of sheep, stampeding them through fences and killed two lambs. The creatures, not unlike black panthers in shape and size, then backtracked and followed a farmer's wife who was riding a motor bike. Mrs Lilian Moir of Kulja said: "At first light I heard a commotion in the paddock. I drove the motor bike into the paddock and found the sheep had panicked, broken down a fence and got into the barley. It took some time to get them back to their paddock where I found two dead lambs. One had its neck broken and its tongue was eaten out.On the way back to the farm I noticed pug marks over my . motor cycle wheel tracks. The creatures had backtracked and must have followed me for a while."The creatures were first seen around the Kulja farms two months ago. Mr George Moir chased the two creatures in his utility for more than three miles at speeds up to 45 mph. They have been sighted by at least eight people. The descriptions have tallied-cat-like, bigger than an alsation dog, jet black from head to tail, long slim body, a narrow head, a long tail that curls at the end.Fauna warden Don Noble of Wongan Hills, tracked the animals but has been unable to identify the tracks.Another Kulja farmer, Ron Johnson, and Mr Moir say the nearest wild animal they resemble is the black panther. Mr Johnson set a trap 8 ft high and baited it with a sheep carcass. The trap was sprung and the carcass partly eaten but because he did not cover the top, the creature got out. This week plaster casts of the tracks were sent to Perth for identification. The casts were regarded as not good enough to be read because they were taken from a sand print. However, they appeared to be un-dog like and made by a creature much larger than a dingo.Mrs Moir was contacted this week by Mr W. Adams of Cunderdin, who said that 10 years ago he was in the district with a black creature similar to those seen today. He had not reported it at the time because of possible disbelief and ridicule.

Easy to use 2 part silicon-peel the mould off in about 15 minutes and pour plaster.Use gloves of course.

Another wombat killed that was photographed fresh in Victoria.Notice no blood and nice and clean which implies cat attack.
No wild dogs in area.

Canine marks on Ron Jones property Victoria. How many native animals in the Australian bush will do this because dogs dont.
But cats do.Grab and smother...
Now obviously we believe there are normal f.cattus ie house cats, gone wild which are classified as feral cats.
But..any non indigenous animals are called feral..so ..the unidentified large felids runing around are feral as well.
But...could f.cattus be running around that are sometimes getting mistaken for exotics.
Yes.!
Verismo’s Leonetti Reserve Red called Leo, a Maine Coon who weighs in at 35 pounds and measures 48 inches from nose to tail (Guinness World Records)
Now I cannot verify if this is the exact size in the Guinness World Records because I do not have a copy, but for argument sake we will assume it is.
But here is a clip of a feral cat, that when freshly skinned was a fraction longer, not heavier, than this world record. This was shot in the Victorian High Country.

The black cat that has stalked the countryside of the Ashburton District and haunted the imagination of trampers is about to be captured on film.
Two postgraduate natural history film students from Otago University are making the legendary “black panther” and its spotters the subject of their end-of-year film, a film they hope will attract wide interest around New Zealand.
Prior to Christmas Pip Walls and Mark Orton spent several days roaming the hills with Alan Kircher, one of the panther spotters, and yesterday headed into the Mt Somers Track with Nic Newman, who saw the big cat in June last year.
When the pair decided to base their film around the black cat sightings, they never imagined the public response would be so positive, Ms Walls said.
“After we went to the media with what we were doing the response was huge. We’ve had loads of people call us and have loads to now get through. We had a fantastic public response, all of it positive. In all those calls we only got two hoax calls, and even they were great,” she said.
Yesterday’s filming was the first of at least three in the district, where the crew will spend time on a farm property, at Lake Clearwater and on Winterslow Station. On each occasion they will film the people who spotted the “panther”, recording their tale as part of building up a complete picture of the cat and its travels.
To provide another angle to the film, they hope to meet with Sceptics Society chair Vicki Hide.
Orana Park will also be visited before the crew head south to Bendigo Station and Twizel.
When they chose the mysterious cat as their film subject they never imagined it would become such a huge project or one that would attract so much public attention, Ms Walls said.
The film will screen in Dunedin on June 9 and its makers hope there will be an opportunity for it to screen in the Ashburton District shortly after its premier.
Those involved in the filming will be kept posted on progress and will be invited to the southern screening, she said.
